Hidden Dresses

by @ Thursday, October 13th, 2011. Filed under Dresses, experiments, Fashion Challenge, Refashioned

I have fond memories of the Highlights Magazine Hidden Pictures puzzles. When I was out shopping with my friend Kris she said that my brain is just wired to find the hidden objects.  I see dresses inside dresses like some people can see dead people.

Exhibit A

Fugly cotton muumuu.  The fabric was nice and florals are in right now. What to do?

Stare at the photo for a minute.  If you look closely there is another dress dying to get out of that scary border print.

The sleeves were fairly easy to remove.  Finishing the edges was a challenge.  The key was using the existing structure as a facing around the armhole and adding some hem tape on the lower half (this fabric was nice and soft, but it was prone to shredding).

Another wearable garment.  It will be at Frock On Vintage for some lucky person to take home.

Tulle Much

This refashionista had a job ahead of her when she said she would make this dress wearable.

The fabric was a nice polished cotton (This was probably an expensive dress back in the day.)  The tulle under the skirt and in the sleeves had to go.  Scratch that.  The tulle and the sleeves had to go.

Then yards of skirt had to go.  I could not envision a drop-waist maxi dress out of this fabric.  Maybe a flowing polyester, but not this.  I made the dress a more reasonable 34″ from shoulder to hem.  I made an extra deep hem so it would hang better.

Now for new sleeves.  I decided that the dress had enough structure so the sleeves were really there for decoration.  I went for a simple pleated strap that could be adjusted to wear on or off the shoulder.

Now this is a wearable dress.  It will be at Frock On Vintage for some lucky person to take home.

Frock On Vintage that is…

I am stitching for a new store kids.  It goes live on  Oct. 15 and they are throwing a party to celebrate.

Frock On Vintage will be teaming up with Slacker magazine, Arr Squeeze and KVRX to bring you food, drinks and music!

Complimentary alcoholic beverages will be provided for the 21 and up crowd compliments of Treaty Oak Rum. There will also be tasty bites, a photo booth and discounts and giveaways to boot! You will also have a chance to win one of four $50 gift cards from yours truly just for “liking” the event on Do512.

The party will go from 11am-7pm with music starting at two. Grab a drink and look through some clothes while rocking out to Guache, Starma, Young Girls, She Sir or The Ugly Beats with DJ Czech One on the 1s and 2s between sets. How fun does that sound? Don’t forget to “like” Frock On Vintage on Facebook for updates and discounts.

You can check out the stuff I am working on for the store on my Flickr.  I know you are dying to see what I did with this dress.

Contemporary use of the word conjures up a mental image of an independent a childless, stylish frumpy, middle-aged woman who is a jet-setting, trendsetter somewhat depressed, and is an inspiration to other women longing to be like other "normal" women.
